About NSU
Novosibirsk State University was established by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR dated January 9, 1958, six months after the decision to found the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
On September 29, 1959 Academician S.L. Sobolev gave the first lecture to students of the new University.
The University was growing up together with Novosibirsk Scientific Center focusing on training highly qualified specialists for science and education.
Since the establishment the total number of NSU graduates has exceeded 50 000. More than 6 000 of them have defended their Ph.D. theses, over 1600 have been awarded Doctor’s degree. 48 graduates of NSU became full members of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Among the University graduates there are many laureates of prestigious world awards and prizes such as Fields Medal, EPS Europhysics Prize, etc. There are also more than 100 laureates of the Lenin and State Prizes, the Prizes of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and the Russian Federation, Presidential Awards in Science and Education, the Prize of the Russian Federation Government as well as prizes of eminent scientists. Among graduates of NSU there are top businessmen and entrepreneurs as well as managers of large enterprises and academic research organizations.
The feature of NSU is the system of competitive selection and training of talented young people.
NSU is the only University in Siberia with the developed multilevel system of continuing education. The system of selection and training of highly qualified specialists consists of Olympiads, correspondence schools on various subjects, winter and summer schools for students and applicants as well as undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate training at NSU.

Training of qualified research and educational personnel is performed at the departments of doctorate and postgraduate studies.
The main form of training within the system of postgraduate vocational education is postgraduate studies. This department has worked at NSU since 1963.
Postgraduate training is provided in the following areas:
- physico-mathematical (mathematics, mechanics, physics),
- chemical,
- biological,
- technical,
- historical,
- economical,
- philosophical,
- philological (literary and language studies),
- sociological and political fields
- geosciences.
Postgraduate studies are provided in a full-time and part-time mode.
The training duration is 3 years full-time and 4 years – by correspondence.
Russian citizens who have higher professional education at graduate level and some research accomplishments can enter the postgraduate course on a competitive basis. Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree are not eligible to enter postgraduate studies. Foreign citizens including those of the CIS countries can be enrolled in postgraduate studies within international and intergovernmental agreements of the Russian Federation as well as by agreements implying the reimbursement of training by legal bodies and individuals.
Since all the work of Novosibirsk State University is built on close cooperation with research institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the main base for training of postgraduate and doctoral students are those institutions. Postgraduate students are guided by highly qualified professionals – Doctors of Science, corresponding members, academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, most of them are members of the Siberian Branch of RAS.
The process of admission and training postgraduates is performed according to the Federal Law “On Higher and Postgraduate Vocational Education” and the Decree of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation of March, 27 1998 ?814.*
Application for Degree
Every person having a higher professional education can apply for the Candidate of Science degree.
While preparing their theses, the applicants are attached to the University to pass the Candidate qualifying exams (for 2 years) and prepare their dissertation (for 3 years).
Applicants’ training is performed within the same research areas as postgraduate training.

Dates of postgraduate admission are annually set by the Admission Board in May of the current year (enrollment is usually performed in June and September).
Postgraduate training is conducted on state budget and contract (reimbursable) basis.
The number of state – subsidized places for postgraduate studies is defined by the admission control figures set by Federal Education Agency. Enrollment on a contractual basis is carried out beyond the plan.
When admitting to entry exams the Admission Board takes into account the opinion of an academic advisor.
Those entering postgraduate studies pass competitive entry exams in:
Major area;
Philosophy;
Foreign language.
Those who have fully or partly passed Candidate qualifying exams, for admission to postgraduate studies do not pass corresponding entry exams. Results of graduation master exams in philosophy and foreign language are counted as entry exams for postgraduate studies.
Admission Board that consists of Vice-Rector for Research, deans of departments and the head of Research and Postgraduate Studies Department, makes a decision regarding each applicant. The decision is based on the entry examinations results and provides admission for applicants most prepared for research and teaching. Admission procedure is completed with an order issued by Rector or Vice Rector for Research.
Full-time postgraduate students are provided with a dormitory accommodation (family members are not included).
